The course will be designed to fit the interests of individual students or small groups of students. Course contents will therefor depend on the interests of the supervisor and the students. For example, over the duration of the course, a student may focus of methods for sampling benthos and fish in lagoon environments, or learn underwater census techniques. The students will get practical training in laboratories under the supervision of post-docs, researchers and professors. Each student will be assigned to one professor or post-doc during the training period.

The student should be familiar with field methods for carrying out particular kinds of studies, such as monitoring fish populations or studing benthic diversity. The student should be able to design a study based on the methods learned and the student should understand the limitations of the methods. At the end of the training period, the student should be very familiar and have a good understanding of the laboratory method or methods he or she trained in. The student should understanding the applications as well as the limitations of the methods learned.
