EMBC+ MODULE 1: Understanding the structure and function of Marine Biodiversity

1.- Principles of aquaculture. Main species for aquaculture in Europe. Main aquaculture procedures. Culture and reproduction.

2.- The relationship between aquaculture and conservation. Biological and ecological criteria for the selection of new species. Practices of culture and breeding in aquaculture. Reproduction: manipulation and induction. Impact of alien species.

3. Environmental impact of marine aquaculture. Sustainable aquaculture. Novel technicques for sustainable aquaculture: sustainable water use, feeding systems, residue treatment. Control of new pathologies and genetic diffusion.

4. Genetic variation in aquaculture. Genetic impact of aquaculture. Measurement tools. Fitness of aquaculture escapees in the wild. Deliberate releases and stocking. Interaction between domestic and wild individuals.

5. Genetic manipulation in aquaculture. Chromosome manipulation. GMO. European legislation about GMOs.
