CIIMAR is a research and advanced training institution associated to the University of Porto. Its mission is to develop high-quality research, promote technological development and support public policies in the area of Marine and Environmental Sciences.
The research carried out at CIIMAR focuses on 5 key areas: Ocean and Coastal Dynamics; Ecology, Biodiversity and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems; Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry; Marine Biology and Biotechnology; Aquaculture. The centre hosts 118 PhD researchers and annually publishes around 230 ISI publications.
The CIIMAR is a renowned centre for advanced training of researchers in Marine Sciences, supporting several MSc courses, a national Doctoral Program in Environmental and Marine Sciences and the European Doctoral Program on Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation (MARES). The centre participates in various platforms and coordination actions related with marine biodiversity and conservation (e.g. Bioplatform, Marbef, Marine Genomics Europe, Euromarine, MARS, EPBRS, KNEU, EMBOS, etc) and as national delegate in relevant international conventions (e.g. Convention on Biological Diversity).
CIIMAR will contribute to the following aspects of the programme: thematic training courses, internships and master thesis supervision. CIIMAR provide all means (infrastructures, support services, critical mass and institutional policies) that ensure the implementation of those activities.
