The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), is a public research organisation of the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, dedicated to marine sciences research, especially devoted to scientific knowledge of the oceans, the sustainability of fishing resources and the marine environment.
The IEO represents Spain in the majority of international science and technology forums related to the sea and its resources. It has 9 coastal oceanographic centres, 5 marine aquaculture research plants, 12 mareographic stations, 1 receiving station for satellite imagery and a fleet of seven oceanographic vessels.
The Oceanographic Centre of Gijón is one of the eight centres that constitute the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).
